凤凰古城旅游区
📍 Xiangxi, Hunan
Fenghuang (Phoenix) Ancient Town is one of China's most beautifully preserved ethnic minority towns, earning its place as a 5A scenic area in 2024. Built along the Tuo River in western Hunan, the town is famous for its stilted wooden houses (Diaojiaolou) that extend over the water's edge, creating a magical reflection at night when hundreds of red lanterns illuminate the river.
With a history dating back over 1,300 years, Fenghuang was an important military and cultural hub for the Miao and Tujia ethnic minorities. The town is also the birthplace of renowned Chinese writer Shen Congwen, whose novel Border Town brought international attention to this region. Key attractions include the Ancient City Wall, East Gate Tower, comprendre the former residence of Shen Congwen, and the picturesque Rainbow Bridge. The best time to visit is in the evening when the town transforms into a glowing wonderland of lantern light.
