Guilin & Yangshuo

Introduction to Guilin & Yangshuo

Guilin and Yangshuo together form one of China's most breathtaking destinations, famous worldwide for their dramatic karst limestone landscapes. The region has inspired Chinese poets and painters for centuries with its ethereal scenery of towering limestone peaks, emerald-green rivers, mist-shrouded valleys, and terraced rice paddies. As the famous Chinese proverb says: "Guilin's scenery is the finest under heaven, but Yangshuo's is even better." Whether cruising down the Li River, cycling through rural villages, exploring underground caves, or simply watching the sunset paint the karst peaks in golden light, this region offers a deeply immersive experience in some of the most beautiful natural scenery on Earth.

Li River Cruise

The Li River cruise from Guilin to Yangshuo is the single most popular and iconic experience in the region, and for good reason. The 83-kilometer journey takes approximately four hours and winds through a landscape of extraordinary beauty. Along the way, you will pass dramatic limestone karst peaks rising directly from the river, traditional fishing villages, bamboo groves, and water buffalo grazing on the riverbanks. The cruise passes several famous landmarks including Elephant Trunk Hill, Crown Cave, and the striking "Nine Horses Fresco Hill" where erosion patterns on the cliff face are said to resemble nine horses.

Large cruise boats depart from Zhujiang Pier in Guilin and arrive at Yangshuo's West Street area. For a more intimate experience, consider a smaller bamboo raft from Yangdi to Xingping, which covers the most scenic section of the river. The Xingping area is particularly photogenic — the scenery depicted on the 20 RMB banknote was inspired by the view here. Cruises operate year-round, but the best conditions are from September to November when the water is clear and the weather is pleasant.

Travel Tip: Book your Li River cruise at least one day in advance, especially during peak season (October, Chinese National Day holiday, and spring festival). Sit on the upper deck for the best views. Bring sunscreen, a hat, and a light jacket as it can be breezy on the water.

Yangshuo Countryside

Yangshuo is a small town surrounded by some of the most spectacular countryside in China. The area is a paradise for outdoor enthusiasts and those seeking a slower pace of life. The landscape is characterized by karst peaks dotting the countryside, lush green fields, meandering rivers, and traditional farming villages. One of the best ways to explore the Yangshuo countryside is by bicycle or electric scooter. Popular cycling routes include the path along the Yulong River, which passes through bamboo forests, rice paddies, and small villages where you can stop for tea or a meal with local families.

The Yulong River is a quieter, more pristine tributary of the Li River. Bamboo rafting on the Yulong is a magical experience — the rafts are poled by local boatmen through crystal-clear water surrounded by towering karst peaks. The journey typically takes about one to two hours and is far less crowded than the main Li River cruise. Other popular countryside activities include rock climbing (Yangshuo is one of Asia's top climbing destinations), hiking, and taking a cooking class to learn how to prepare local dishes.

Top Attractions in Guilin

Reed Flute Cave

Reed Flute Cave (Ludi Yan) is Guilin's most famous cave, a spectacular limestone cavern filled with stalactites, stalagmites, rock formations, and underground pools illuminated by colorful lighting. The cave is approximately 240 meters long and has been a tourist attraction for over 1,200 years, with inscriptions on the walls dating back to the Tang dynasty. The formations have been given imaginative names such as "Dragon Pagoda," "Mushroom Hill," and "Virgin Forest." A guided walk through the cave takes about 40 minutes and ends with a short boat ride on an underground lake. Despite the artificial lighting, the natural beauty of the cave formations is genuinely impressive.

Elephant Trunk Hill

Elephant Trunk Hill (Xiangbishan) is Guilin's most iconic landmark, located at the confluence of the Taohua River and the Li River. The hill gets its name from its distinctive shape — a large limestone formation that resembles an elephant dipping its trunk into the river to drink water. The hill is about 55 meters tall and features a cave between the "trunk" and the "body" known as Water Moon Cave, which has been a favorite subject of Chinese poets for centuries. The park surrounding the hill is pleasant for a short stroll and offers good views of the city and river. It is particularly beautiful at sunset when the golden light illuminates the rock formation.

Top Attractions in Yangshuo

Moon Hill

Moon Hill is one of Yangshuo's most famous natural landmarks, a limestone karst peak with a large natural arch near the summit that resembles a full moon. The hill is located about 8 kilometers south of Yangshuo town and requires a hike of approximately 800 stone steps to reach the viewing platform near the arch (about a 30-minute climb). The effort is well rewarded — from the top, you are treated to panoramic views of the surrounding karst landscape and countryside. The "moon" changes shape as you ascend, appearing as a crescent from lower viewpoints and becoming a full circle at the top. Moon Hill is also a popular rock climbing destination with routes of varying difficulty on the surrounding cliffs.

Impression Sanjie Liu (Light Show)

Directed by renowned filmmaker Zhang Yimou, the Impression Sanjie Liu is a spectacular outdoor light and sound performance staged on the Li River itself. Over 600 performers — all local fishermen and farmers from nearby villages — present a show that incorporates the natural landscape as its backdrop, with the karst peaks and river serving as the stage. The performance features traditional songs, dances, and fishing techniques, illuminated by dramatic lighting effects. Shows run nightly (weather permitting) and last about 70 minutes. It is one of the most unique theatrical experiences in China and should not be missed if you are visiting Yangshuo.

Outdoor Activities

  • Cycling: Rent a bicycle or e-bike in Yangshuo and explore the countryside at your own pace. The routes along the Yulong River and through villages like Gaotian and Jiuxian are particularly scenic and relatively flat.
  • Bamboo Rafting: Available on both the Li River and Yulong River. The Yulong River rafts are smaller and more peaceful, perfect for couples and families.
  • Rock Climbing: Yangshuo is China's premier rock climbing destination with over 1,500 routes on limestone karst cliffs. Whether you are a beginner or an experienced climber, there are routes for every skill level. Several professional climbing schools offer guided trips and courses.
  • Kayaking: Kayaking on the Li or Yulong rivers offers a peaceful and immersive way to experience the karst landscape from water level.
  • Cooking Classes: Learn to prepare authentic local dishes at one of Yangshuo's many cooking schools. Classes typically include a visit to the local market to purchase ingredients.

Local Cuisine

Guilin and Yangshuo have their own distinctive culinary traditions, heavily influenced by the region's agricultural abundance and ethnic minority cultures. The most famous local dish is Guilin Rice Noodles (Guilin Mifen), a beloved comfort food made with round rice noodles served in a savory broth with toppings such as pickled green beans, peanuts, fried tofu skin, scallions, and your choice of meat. This dish is eaten for breakfast, lunch, or dinner and can be found at countless noodle shops throughout the region. The best versions are often at small, unassuming roadside stalls.

  • Yangshuo Beer Fish: Fresh river fish (usually carp) cooked with beer, tomatoes, green peppers, and local herbs. A signature Yangshuo dish best enjoyed at restaurants along West Street.
  • Oil Tea (Youcha): A traditional drink made by frying tea leaves with ginger, garlic, and roasted peanuts, then adding hot water. An acquired taste but an important part of local culture, especially among the Yao and Zhuang ethnic minorities.
  • Li River Snails: Stir-fried river snails with garlic, chili, and local spices — a popular dish in Guilin.
  • Taro Looped Meat (Liyu Luosuo): Slices of pork belly wrapped around taro root and steamed — a festive dish often served at local celebrations.

Best Time to Visit

The best time to visit Guilin and Yangshuo is from September to November during the autumn months, when the weather is dry, temperatures are comfortable (18-25 C), and the river water is at its clearest. Spring (April to May) is also beautiful, with lush green landscapes and blooming flowers, though rainfall can be heavy and may cause the river to become muddy. Summer (June to August) is the peak tourist season with hot and humid weather, and the landscape is at its greenest. Winter (December to February) is mild compared to northern China, with temperatures around 8-15 C, and offers a quieter experience with fewer tourists. The Li River is most picturesque after rain when mist swirls around the karst peaks, creating the classic Chinese landscape painting scene.

Getting There: Guilin has its own international airport (KWL) with direct flights from major Chinese cities and some international destinations. High-speed trains connect Guilin to Guangzhou (about 2.5 hours), Shenzhen (3 hours), and other cities. From Guilin to Yangshuo, you can take a bus (about 1.5 hours), a Li River cruise (4 hours), or a taxi/private car (about 1 hour). Within Yangshuo, bicycles and e-bikes are the most convenient way to get around.
