Yunnan Grand Tour

Route Overview

Yunnan is China's most geographically and culturally diverse province, a place where tropical rainforests meet snow-capped mountains, and ancient Buddhist temples coexist with villages of ethnic minorities who have maintained their unique traditions for centuries. This 10-day Grand Tour takes you from Kunming's year-round spring climate through Dali's romantic lakeside scenery to Lijiang's ancient Naxi capital at the foot of Jade Dragon Snow Mountain.

Route Highlights

Kunming Stone Forest • Erhai Lake Cycling • Dali Old Town • Three Pagodas • Lijiang Old Town • Jade Dragon Snow Mountain • Naxi Culture • Minority Villages

Why This Route?

Yunnan offers an antidote to China's rapid modernization — here you'll find cobblestone streets, traditional architecture, colorful ethnic festivals, and landscapes that seem pulled from a traditional Chinese painting. The province has 25 of China's 56 ethnic groups, each with distinct customs, costumes, and cuisines. From the Bai people of Dali to the Naxi of Lijiang, every day brings new cultural discoveries.

  • UNESCO World Heritage Sites: Lijiang Old Town, Honghe Rice Terraces
  • 25+ ethnic minorities with unique cultures
  • Stunning natural diversity: tropical to alpine in one province
  • Excellent weather year-round in the south
  • Growing network of flights and high-speed trains

Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day 1-2: Kunming — Spring City

Begin your Yunnan journey in the "Spring City," where temperatures hover around 18°C year-round. Explore the remarkable Stone Forest — a UNESCO site of towering karst pillars that ancient legend says were the arrows of a goddess. Return to the city to stroll through Green Lake Park, where locals practice tai chi and play traditional instruments by the water. Visit the Yunnan Provincial Museum to understand the province's incredible ethnic diversity before heading to the Flowers and Birds Market for local crafts and street food.

Day 3: Kunming to Dali

Take the comfortable high-speed train from Kunming to Dali (about 2.5 hours). Arrive at the foot of the Cangshan Mountains overlooking Erhai Lake — one of China's most romantic lakesides. Check into a guesthouse in Dali Old Town, a beautifully preserved town of white-walled, tile-roofed buildings, cobblestone lanes, and babbling canals. In the evening, explore the vibrant Foreigner Street and enjoy the town's bohemian atmosphere.

Day 4-5: Dali — Lakeside Charm

Your Dali days revolve around Erhai Lake and the surrounding mountains. Rent a bicycle and cycle the 120-kilometer lakeside road, stopping at traditional Bai villages, fish farms, and scenic viewpoints. Visit the Three Pagodas — a 1,000-year-old Buddhist complex with three elegant Tang Dynasty pagodas. Take a boat ride on Erhai Lake at sunset, watching the Cangshan Mountains turn purple in the fading light. Explore the Dali Ancient City Wall and the Xizhou morning market, where you can sample Bai specialties like Bai豆腐 and乳扇.

Day 6: Dali to Shaxi

Leave the more touristic Dali for the remarkably preserved Shaxi Ancient Town — a former post town on the Tea Horse Road, the ancient trade route connecting Yunnan to Tibet. This tiny walled town with its cobbled streets and ancient inn facades feels frozen in time. The locals, mostly Yi people, still wear traditional dress. Explore the Sideng Market Square and the local tea houses serving aged pu'er tea.

Day 7-8: Shaxi to Lijiang

Continue north to Lijiang, the ancient capital of the Naxi Kingdom and now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Old Town is a labyrinth of stone paths, stone bridges, and wooden houses arranged along canals shaded by willow trees. The Mufu Mansion, once home to the local Naxi rulers, offers insight into the Kingdom's history. In the evening, watch the Naxi Music performance — ancient melodies preserved by the 800-year-old Naxi Ancient Music Orchestra.

Day 9: Jade Dragon Snow Mountain

No visit to Lijiang is complete without a trip to Jade Dragon Snow Mountain — a 5,596-meter sacred peak visible from throughout the town. Take the cable car to the glacier park or hike the breathtaking Cloud Grassland trail. In the afternoon, visit the Blue Valley, a pristine mountain valley with crystal-clear streams and meadows of wildflowers. The views of the mountain's peaks piercing through the clouds are simply unforgettable.

Day 10: Lijiang — Final Exploration

On your last day, visit the Black Dragon Pool — the iconic viewpoint where Jade Dragon Snow Mountain reflects perfectly in its still waters. Explore the quiet edge of the old town before the day-trippers arrive. Consider a side trip to the tea horse road village of Baisha or Shuhe before your departure. Fly from Lijiang's Sanyi Airport or take the scenic train back to Kunming.

Practical Information

Best Time to Visit

Yunnan is a year-round destination. March to June offers the best weather with clear skies and comfortable temperatures. September to November brings autumn colors and harvest festivals. Avoid Chinese national holidays (Golden Week in early October) when tourist sites are extremely crowded. Winter (December-February) can be cold at higher elevations in Lijiang.

Difficulty Level

Moderate — This route involves some long drives (4-6 hours between destinations) and moderate walking. Lijiang sits at 2,400 meters altitude; Jade Dragon Snow Mountain reaches 4,500 meters. Those with altitude concerns should acclimatize in Dali first.

Budget Estimate

$1,200-2,000 per person for mid-range travel, including:

  • Internal transport: $150-300 (train tickets, local drivers)
  • Accommodation: $30-80/night for boutique guesthouses
  • Attractions: $100-150 (Stone Forest, cable cars, boat rides)
  • Food: $20-40/day for excellent local cuisine

Travel Tips

  • Hire a local driver for the Dali-Lijiang journey for flexibility and photo stops
  • Book Jade Dragon Snow Mountain cable car tickets in advance during peak season
  • Bargain respectfully at markets — it's expected and part of the culture
  • Download Baidu Maps offline for rural areas without data
  • Carry layers — mountain weather changes quickly and temperatures drop at night
